“Very memorable experience. Overall all the pieces were very well curated and every song presents a different feeling. Love the dreamscapes concerto and the Gan Jiang Mo Xie Fanatsia. I have also learnt that different conductors have varying conducting methods, and this is so far the most memorable one I have seen.”

“The overall concert experience was truly mesmerising as the pieces presented alongside with the conductor’s musical interpretation was truly breath-taking. Compared to the other recordings of Macau Capriccio, the slow and melodious part of the piece had its melodious shaped very elegantly by the conductor. The balance of the instruments was just right and it managed to depict an idyllic landscape. My learning point from this concert was that each conductor really interprets a piece very differently especially the tumultuous Gan Jiang Ye Mo where the dissonance is highlighted by the conductor and his conducting style truly gave me a clearer idea of the piece’s atmosphere and intent.

Regarding a possible room of improvement, I feel that the marimba could’ve been played louder or perhaps had its mic raised to a louder volume. In addition, the orchestra felt slightly messy during some of the bars which had changing time signatures and a gas tempo. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the concert programme wholeheartedly. The seating allocated to us this time allowed me to appreciate the concert as we could see which instruments were playing, and also hear the orchestra clearer —— allowing us to enjoy the concert even more.”

“Attending the concert Dreamscapes: Pang Kapang and SCO was a truly immersive and thought-provoking experience. The collaboration between Pang Kapang and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) created a unique fusion of traditional and contemporary elements, blending the rich textures of Chinese orchestral music with experimental and avant-garde soundscapes. The concert felt like a journey through different emotional and imaginative landscapes, aptly living up to its title, Dreamscapes.

My favourite piece from the concert was one that showcased the different Dreamscapes with the Erhu solo. This piece stood out for its emotional depth and technical brilliance, leaving a lasting impression on me. Dreamscapes: Pang Kapang and SCO was a captivating exploration of the possibilities of music. It challenged conventions, evoked deep emotions, and left the audience with a sense of wonder. It was a reminder of the power of music to transcend boundaries and create new worlds.”

“My favourite concert piece played was Macau Capriccio. The piece beautifully captures the cultural essence of Macau by blending traditional Chinese musical elements with expressive orchestration, creating a vivid and immersive soundscape that transports the audience into the heart of the city. Through the interplay of melodic lines from instruments, the music reflects Macau’s rich heritage and unique blend of Chinese and Portuguese influences.

The vibrant rhythms and dynamic contrasts evoke the energy of bustling streets, while the lyrical passages bring out the city’s historical depth and charm. This masterful fusion of tradition and storytelling makes Macau Capriccio a mesmerizing and unforgettable musical experience.”

“The overall concert was an immense success; Maestro Pang’s musicality and virtuosity can be felt throughout the concert; his dedication towards music and the fiery passion in his conducting was touching at places especially during the fast running passages. His take on the unconventional tempo also showcases his genius and a hint of underlying ‘madness’ which are important factors in music making. I learnt a lot from Ms Xu Wenjing and her solo and I gained inspiration to practice my 跳把after hearing how clean and smooth hers are; and how the notes are all in tune.

My fav pieces are in the latter part of the concert, such as Macau 随想曲 as Maestro Pang provided the audience a different approach from what can be found online; and I really appreciate his version more maybe due to the fact that it’s live.”

“My Overall Concert Experience is amazing! Some learning pointers I have from this concert was how music does not need to have a set melody but can be like the Sang Nila repertoire, which is more visual and to paint a picture. More things I learnt is that there are so many ways to play an instrument. For example; how the pick slid across the whole last string to produce a metallic sound for the forging of the sword or having the dizi blown where it sounds like the sizzling of the sword in water. This imagery really made this concert experience wonderful!”
