Inspired Learning from SCO Musicians
Thirteen professional SCO musicians are engaged as SNYCO teacher artists in providing holistic training for our members in instrumental and ensemble playing skills and knowledge. Through SNYCO programmes, members received the best holistic music training under the roof of SCO - its team of renowned musicians and acoustically treated concert hall.
Masterclasses & Workshops
Each year, SNYCO organizes approximately four masterclasses and workshops led by distinguished artists and seasoned industry professionals. These sessions provide valuable opportunities for members to broaden their knowledge and refine their skills. Topics covered may include instrument care and maintenance, technical and artistic interpretation, performance etiquette, and other areas essential for professional growth.

Ongoing Support
New Learner's Programme:
Every year, promising youths get the chance to deepen their musical skills through our New Learners' Programme. Introduced in 2017, it is part of our commitment to nurture the next generation of musicians.
Selected through auditions, participants received subsidized private lessons with SNYCO Teacher Artists and may also get to perform at SNYCO concerts and observe masterclasses and workshop prior to participating in the next audition.
The programme has attracted plenty of promising young talent through the years. One of them is Ang Yan Ning Sarah, who participated in the 2020/2021 audition and became an official SNYCO member a year later. Subsequently, she was promoted to SNYCO Dizi Principal and selected for the Hsinchu Chinese Music Camp in 2023.
Besides being a career springboard for youths such as Sarah, the New Learners' Programme also nurtures a pool of exciting new talent for the SNYCO and SCO, ensuring the continued growth of Singapore's Chinese orchestra scene.
Individual Instrumental Tuition Scheme (IITS)
Financial concerns should never get in the way of a young musician's dreams.
That is why SNYCO has the Individual Instrumental Training Scheme for its Singaporean and Permanent Resident members, allowing them to benefit from 24 hours of subsidised private lessons each year with any instrumental experts under an appointed list.
These one-on-one sessions complement our existing group trainings. With personalised support from experts, youth performers get to hone their musical skills and gain a better handle of their individual strengths and weaknesses.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the programme has provided an average of 1,200 hours and S$79,000 worth of subsidised classes every year since its inception in 2009.

Opportunities
Outreach Engagements
At SNYCO, we take education and outreach seriously.
To make Chinese orchestral music more accessible to the wider public, we organise year-round activities in schools as well as parks and other public spaces.
Many of these concerts are free or pitched at a lower price range, allowing people from all walks of life to appreciate the beauty of Chinese orchestral music.
School concerts, comprising orchestral performances by selected SNYCO members, are a staple of our annual seasons. They are part of our larger aim to cultivate the next generation of musicians, and to encourage more promising young performers to audition for a place at SNYCO.
Our members volunteer during the Singapore Chinese Orchestra's outreach programmes, giving them closeup interaction with audiences as an advocate of Chinese instrumental music and challenging their communication skills and knowledge of the art form.
Our Legacy, Our Future
Here at SNYCO, we firmly believe in the importance of staying closely connected with our alumni, both now and into the future. The SNYCO Alumni Collective aims to foster the network and community built in the orchestra over the years. We will take on projects and initiatives which involve members of the SNYCO Alumni Collective – not only to give back to the community, but also to facilitate musical and personal growth.
Members of the SNYCO Alumni Collective will be invited to participate in SNYCO concerts and activities without the need for audition or other admission processes. In such cases, the alumnus's participation will be based on an ad-hoc or project basis (and will be communicated to him/her in writing).
Alumni avenues of participation include (but are not limited to):
- Annual concert performed by mainly alumni
- SNYCO Concerts
- Overseas Concert Tours
- External Engagements
- Behind-the-scenes opportunities
SNYCO alumni members can look forward to receiving Silver Friends of SCO status, and be eligible for 15% discounts on SCO/SNYCO concert tickets along with exclusive first-hand news to SNYCO and SCO activities.
